White After Labor Day?

We have all heard the old school rule, "Never wear white after Labor Day." But then, fashion rules are made to be broken, and what was once taboo becomes trendy again.

You probably wouldn't wear a maxi dress and flip flops on a cold, rainy day in November, but what about a rogue scorcher during mid-September?

Designers are creating great pieces that are obviously made to brighten our wardrobes in the winter months. Take a look:

All of these fashions can be found at www.NeimanMarcus.com.

What do you think? Would you wear white after Labor Day?

China Glaze Magnetix Polishes - An Overview

Here's the batch of China Glaze Magnetix polishes we were able to acquire.

After applying a base coat and letting it dry, apply the Magnetix polish. You'll want to do this process one nail at a time. Next, carefully, and quickly hold the magnet over the nail.  Hold still, or the design will end up more swirly than anticipated. Also, resist the urge to look before the design has set. Another novice mistake that we made was accidentally touching the magnet to the wet polish. It's probably going to happen to you at first, but you will get the hang of it. Overall, we like the magnetic polishes, and especially the China Glaze magnet.

China Glaze Magnetix in Drawn to You shade with Magnetix magnet.

Here's our first attempt with each color:
(Click title to view photos.)

Drawn to You,  a purplish hue
Pull Me Close, a silverfish blue that reminds of all the shades of denim
You Move Me, a metallic tan accentuated with chocolaty magnetic marks
Cling On, a surprise favorite that is much prettier than it appears in the bottle.

If you are sick of shatter polishes and want something new to try, then China Glaze Magnetix is for you!

China Glaze Magnetix - Drawn to You

More Magnetix colors! This one is in the lavender-purple range of shades and is called, 'Drawn To You.' If you haven't used the China Glaze Magnet yet, it is a fun, easy way to do random nail 'art.'

China Glaze Magnetix, Drawn to You

The magnet works on specialized magnetic polishes. Using the China Glaze Magnet, you hold the preferred design over wet polish to give a unique look to your manicure.

We are still perfecting our technique. It's a fun process as long as the magnet doesn't touch the polish.

Check out our other Magnetix posts for more China Glaze colors and designs.

 Happy polishing!

Harvest Moon - China Glaze Capitol Colours from The Hunger Games

We've tried several shades from the Capitol Colours collection previously. When we were shopping, we were drawn to the bronzy color of Harvest Moon.  This is a rich shade with a metallic finish, but it doesn't look too dark.

The Hunger Games Capitol Colours, Harvest Moon

Our pictures aren't the greatest this time around, but we really like the polish. We added Luxe and Lush to the ring finger as shown below. Luxe and Lush offers a nice accent with the iridescent peachy pieces, don't you think?

We decided to add Luxe and Lush all over our manicure.

There are still more China Glaze Hunger Games colors for us to share with you, so stay tuned! Thanks beauties!

China Glaze Magnetix - Pull Me Close

We are still having fun with the China Glaze Magnetix collection. Today, we are posting one of our favorite Magnetix colors, Pull Me Close. However, this polish did prove to be the most difficult to photograph. Even imperfect magnetic lines still look good with this lacquer.

China Glaze, Pull Me Close, Magnetix Collection

It reminds us of shiny denim with an added twist of the darker magnetic lines. Here is a picture of the star on the thumb nail.

China Glaze Magnetix, Pull Me Close, Star Magnet

We got a lot of compliments on this polish, which always a good sign. The rest of the China Glaze Magnetix Collection is linked below.

China Glaze Magnetix Cling On nail polish

Hey y'all! We don't usually say that word, but it just felt like a "y'all" kind of day. Our regular readers know that we are kind of obsessed with the China Glaze Magentix polishes right now. Out with the shatters and in with the magnetics!

China Glaze Magnetix Cling On

Here's another one where we weren't too sure about the color in the bottle, but loved it once it was magnetized. Truthfully, I'm not a huge fan of yellow based greens. They remind me of the pictures of nail fungus they showed us in beauty school. We've never posted a shade in this hue until now because of this. We made an exception for China Glaze's Cling On. We like the lighter frosty effect of the color against the deeper shade of the magnetic lines.

Different lighting - China Glaze Magnetix Cling On

The name may sound like a Star Trek character, yet the nail polish will become a hit of it's own thanks to the options from the China Glaze magnet. We kept an imperfect photo to show what can happen if the magnet isn't kept completely still. (I moved it to peek.) The V-shape became more of a wavy line effect on the middle finger. It looked good though, so we kept it anyway.

If you haven't purchased any China Glaze Magnetix polishes lately, you are missing out! Just one magnet, a range of colors, and you have numerous options for cool nail polish designs that are sure to get everyone's attention.

At-Home Haircuts? Get Conair Barber Shears.

Imagine walking into a hair salon and seeing the Cosmetologist pull out a pair of regular household scissors and whack away at someone’s hair. You’d be horrified, right? So, why would you do this at home?

Licensed hair stylists complete well over 1200 hours of education in most U.S. states, sometimes drastically more. They spend hundreds of dollars on their scissors and maintain them with regular sharpening. Some stylists don’t charge for bang trims, and most that do have a minimal fee ($5-$12 in most salons.) So, Glambo is going to recommend that you never take the scissors to your own hair. But… if you do…

Here is some advice for those occasions where you just need a backup plan, like a slight bang trim before a night out or - gasp! - when the pro missed a piece during a recent salon visit. If you are going to cut your own hair (or your child’s or husband’s) don’t ever do it in a hurry. This will surely backfire. Take your time and make the victim family member sit still. And PLEASE, use scissors that are specifically designed for cutting hair.

Conair sells 5 ½ inch barbering shears in fun colors and designs for roughly $12 U.S. at stores like Walmart and Target. These scissors have an extended piece to place your ring finger, which should assist you in steadying your hand and in angling the shears better during the haircut. They also come with a case for the ends, making them easy to store (and hide from your family. You know they’ll try to snag them for another purpose, which is a no-no.) We are not a fan of cutting your hair at home, but if you do, decent hair shears are a must! Conair helps fill that need, and therefore, Conair Barber Shears get a Glambo Kiss of Approval.

China Glaze You Move Me Magnetix Nail Polish

Magnetix nail polish by China Glaze seems to be our obsession over the last few weeks. We'll start by introducing a shade that appears to be the least popular, but is actually one of our favorites.

What makes the China Glaze magnetix so cool is their horseshoe shaped magnet. It's easy to use and has three different designs that can be used on any magnetic polish.

China Glaze magnet with three designs. Sells for $10 US.

In the bottle, You Move Me may appear a little blah and similar to other colors you may already have. (Just being honest.) In fact, the ladies at the pro beauty supply store said that this color barely sells compared to the other shades - until we showed them our nails.

What we love about it:

The color is perfect to show off the designs created by the magnets. As you can see, the magnetic lines aren't black like you'd expect. They turn a deep brown, and in the right light, the edges get a frosty glow. The combination is really cool. If you have a conservative job, you could still get away with a You Move Me magnetic manicure. When you are out and about, people will still ask to see your nails and give you compliments.

China Glaze You Move Me magnetic nail polish.
Thank you to our new nail model! First polish pics ever.

So, if you are at the store and see a bottle of China Glaze's You Move Me, don't pass it up! You just may fall in love with the shade and it's magnetic chocolatey swirls.

Hollywood Accessory Dots

I found this little gizmo, and it saved me big-time when I was going to a wedding last weekend.

With wrap dresses being in style this season and very figure flattering, I tried on several before selecting one to wear to a party. The problem? The wrap dresses seem to be wide open in the front - at least on me. We are not talking about showing a little cleavage here. It shows half the bra. I finally picked a dress that I thought would work with a safety pin, although I hate buying clothes and then having to alter them. Anyway, I walked by these Accessory Dots, and thought I would give them a try.

Love them! They worked like a charm. They are sticky enough to hold everything in place, but are not obnoxious to remove when you go to wash your garment. For less than $6.00 US, you can expand your wardrobe choices, and avoid putting holes in your clothes. So, unlike Cami Secret (which we know does not work,) these nickel sized Hollywood Accessory Dots get a Glambo Kiss of Approval.

Sample Saturdays at Nordstrom

Glambo is a fan!

Did you know that Nordstroms gives out free cosmetic samples every Saturday?

Last weekend, we received mostly perfume samples. Since this Glambo Girl applies perfume before leaving the house, spraying a fragrance in the store isn't usually an option. Perfume samples are great for traveling, and have helped us discover new favorite scents. Nordstroms also gives other types of samples, and often has them available on the counter ready for your selection. If there is a product you would like to try, a sales associate will prepare a sample for you to take home.

Free cosmetic samples? How could Nordstrom not get a Glambo Kiss of Approval for their Sample Saturdays?

Physicians Formula Organic Wear Mascara

You've probably seen the green mascara tube with the leaf shaped tip. Physicians Formula Organic Wear is 100% free of harsh chemicals, synthetic preservatives, parabens, fibers, dyes and supposedly clumping, smudging and flaking. That's the info straight from the package. Hypoallergenic and fragrance free elements are added to the list of this eco-friendly mascara. Even the brush is recyclable. But, does it work? We Glambo Girls put Physicians Formula to the test.

We liked the green container. It's easy to find in your makeup bag, and the leaf shape doesn't negatively effect the application technique. Photographing the highly reflective packaging wasn't as easy, but you get the idea.

The brush is oblong shaped and leans toward a chunky style. It appears to be plastic, not bristly, as that is likely part of the fiber-free elements. The formula is on the thicker side, and we were able to apply it without clumps or smears. We tested it several times before relating our experiences.

If you want to 'go green,' then this is the mascara for you. If you want a long wearing 'jumbo lash' look, then Physicians Formula fails to deliver the big, thick, dramatic lashes it advertises if worn for an entire day. What we first noticed is that we looked tired around 4pm. The reason for this is that the mascara wears off in an even smudgy hue under the eye creating a dark circle effect just under the lower lash line. Any of the lengthening benefits of the mascara were gone by mid-day, and the under eye area is apparently where they reappeared. We continued to test the Organic Wear, and removed it with our regular eye make-up remover. After taking a shower, a lighter version of that smudged hue was under the eye again. We found ourselves using make-up remover twice.

While we applaud Physicians Formula for going green, Organic Wear doesn't measure up to the high standards of the competitive mascara industry. We are not going to formally dis this product though because considering everything it doesn't have, it performed better than most might expect.

An Egg-stra Special Easter

Hello Peeps! This Easter holiday, we thought that we would share some of our favorite egg shaped beauty products and this cartoon we found to brighten your day. (We Glambo Girls just love sarcasm.)

On to the egg shaped products that are sure to be a treat for any beauty lover.

eos lip balm:
This product is beloved by girls of all ages, and is absolutely perfect to dress up a glamorous Easter basket.

Ped Egg:
If you don't own a Ped Egg, then you are missing out. This is the best tool we have found to smooth rough, dry heels. The egg shape is an ergonomic design for ease of use. They also come with a handle which will prevent a lot of the bending and leg lifting.

Scented Bar Soaps:
Many bar soaps are conveniently egg shaped for Easter. Choose from a variety of scents and colors that are sure to perk up any basket. This one is vanilla, and we personalized it for Glambo, but you can choose from many solid pastels.

If you have little kids in your life, don't forget to check out Avon's Easter products. And, to see a cosmetics filled basket any girl would love, click on our Have a Beautiful Easter  post.

Burger King Burger Eye Shadow

We've seen our fair share of crazy looks and awe inspiring makeup, but it's nothing compared to what Burger King created with their Whopper eye.

This is a real ad campaign from the Netherlands, but we thought it might have been an early April Fools prank. Either way, it's very cool in an extreme artistry kind of way. We love the yellow that mimics cheese squares and mustard. The green eyeliner and mascara totally sets it off, and the eyebrow shape and color really help this illusion. They even have 'grill marks' under the eye.

So there you have it: The Whopper Eye. Just when you thought you had seen everything.

MoroccanOil

Ask ANYONE that has tried MoroccanOil, and they will tell you that they love it. We Glambo Girls are no exception.

Lately, argon oil is all the buzz, and they are adding it to everything. Just know, this is largely due to the success of the MoroccanOil line. It's not always easy to find unless you visit a salon because MoroccanOil is tight with it's distributorship. So, you won't see it in Sally Beauty Suppy, SuperDrug, Ulta or Sephora. But, if you can get a bottle to try, we guarantee that you will be hooked.

Apply just a little bit through your freshly washed hair, and style as usual. You will notice a few things:

1) The Smell: MoroccanOil is fragrant, but we have yet to hear from anyone that doesn't find the scent appealing.

2) Your hair will look and feel great! It provides a sleek look free from frizz and fly-aways. It can be used on any hair type, and has amazing smoothing qualities for those with dry, coarse hair.

3) Blow-dry faster! We are not sure how this works, but when you use MoroccanOil, your drying time is nearly cut in half. Yet, your hair does not feel or look dry and brittle.

We are fans of the entire line, but if you are able to try just one MoroccanOil product, this is the one to get. MoroccanOil Treatment also comes in a light version for those with thin or ultra-fine hair.

China Glaze The Hunger Games Capitol Colours Riveting, Dist. 3

Another long title / name for The Hunger Games nail polish collection from China Glaze. When we first heard the buzz about the Capitol Colours, we envisioned bright crazy shades based upon our knowledge of Capitol fashion from the books. (They paint themselves green and have surgery to look like a tiger for Pete's sake!) Then, China Glaze changed course and decided to focus on the colors of the Districts. Upon seeing the collection, we were slightly disappointed by the lack of loud shades. So, we were immediately drawn to the orange Riveting.

China Glaze Hunger Games Capitol Colours Riveting

Maybe we were just in 'hater mode' that day, because my next out-loud thought was that the hue was similar to OPI's Animal-istic. I was immediately chastised by the girl in the beauty supply store, and rightfully so. This color has such a great shimmer to it. It's been swatched on pale skin, but we just know it would look even prettier with a tan. Grab a bottle of this color now because you will really want to use it more often come spring and summer. Look at this sparkle! Love it!

If you read our Hook and Line post, then you know that most of my nails snapped when we were getting our Hunger Games nail polish collection. Maybe that's why I wasn't my usual up-beat self. One thing is for certain though, you can't help but be happy when you see this shade of orange on your nails (even if they are shorter than you would prefer.) The color and sparkle are sure to make you smile. And, if you are creating 'Girl on Fire' nails, then this polish is an absolute must-have.

China Glaze Hunger Games Capitol Colours - Hook and Line, District 4

Well, that's a long title and description for a long awaited nail polish! Thousands of people are lining up this evening to see the midnight showing and release of The Hunger Games movie. We, here at Glambo, are wearing our Hunger Games nail polish, specifically Hook and Line, District 4 (fishing.) And, we dressed it up with a polish from District 1 (luxury) Luxe and Lush.

The Hunger Games, Hook and Line, District 1

Before you look at our nail pics, know this: Our swatches were hexed! Just before picking up our entire collection of The Hunger Games colours, my nails snapped and broke (so low that they bled. I know, gross, right?) So, please forgive the stubby nails. Of all the nail polishes that we have tried this year while blogging, it almost seems appropriate that this happened with The Hunger Games collection. It's an imperfect, sometimes violent world.

On to the polish:

Hook and Line might seem a little drab in the bottle, but once applied, the color grew on me. The application color matched the bottle on the first coat, but it was sheer. We normally apply two coats over a base, and with two coats the color was darker, greyer and slightly bluer. At first, I preferred the lighter shade, but once Hook and Line was topped with Luxe and Lush, District 1, it was even prettier.

We are reviewing Luxe and Lush, District 1 separately, but we can tell you that we really liked this polish too. It's sure to be a favorite out of the entire collection, and it sold out quickly in stores. We like that the iridescent flecks are all random, odd shapes, not perfectly round circles like other polishes. Again, it's appropriate for The Hunger Games.

China Glaze Hunger Games Capitol Colours
Luxe and Lush over Hook and Line
For those that read The Hunger Games books, we hope you like the movie and get a chance to enjoy The Hunger Games Capitol Colours collection. We have more swatches coming soon, so stay tuned to Glambo.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Top o' the mornin' to ya! Ok, only one of us is part Irish, and it isn't the girl typing, so bear with me. ;) St. Patrick's Day is always fun here in the U.S. The iconic lore of the holiday always makes us think of a few simple things. Since we aren't indulging in green beer and corned beef & cabbage today, we'll keep this post limited to rainbows, that elusive pot of gold, and a cute little leprechaun.

When it comes to beauty, finding the right gold can be tricky. OPI's Gold Shatter nail polish is sure to delight everyone, regardless of coloring and skin tone. It has a pretty metallic shimmer, and the sparkle is really enhanced by a top coat. It separates well, and looks good over any color of nail lacquer.

OPI Gold Shatter over white nail polish.

OPI Gold Shatter over OPI Animal-istic of the Muppets Collection.
The ultimate rainbow can be found with OPI's Rainbow Connection. This gorgeous polish was part of the Muppets Collection, and was limited edition. If you can find a bottle, make sure you capture it! This varnish is truly unique. It sold out quickly, and is still in high demand.

OPI Rainbow Connection, from the Muppets Collection.
As for leprechauns, we are turning to http://www.bellabits.com/. Bella is a twelve year old food blogger cooking up all kinds of treats. She also is our tween Glambo Girl. She always look great, and we love her nails in this picture featuring her shamrock cookie.

We hope you have a fabulous St. Patty's Day! May the luck of the Irish be with you all year long.
XoXo, Glambo

Big Sexy Hair Volumizing Dry Shampoo

Up next in Glambo's Battle of the Dry Shampoos is Big Sexy Hair. You are likely familiar with the big, red cans associated with this line of hair products. Of course, when we saw the Volumizing Dry Shampoo, we had to give it a try.

The Big Sexy Hair version has a bit of a powerful blast. It seems to have some hairspray elements to achieve the volumizing effect. We would recommend choosing this spray if you want to do an updo, backcomb or create volume. Surprisingly, our hair felt clean the next day too. It is the strongest of the dry shampoos we have reviewed, yet it left the least amount of white residue. Big Sexy Hair Dry Shampoo has a light perfumed fragrance that doesn’t linger too long.

We would grab the can of Big Sexy Hair to create a little extra bump to a ponytail and add height to any updo hair style.
It’s nice to see this type of product increase in popularity and become readily available in the marketplace. Big Sexy Hair products always seem to perform well for us, and their Volumizing Dry Shampoo is no exception.

Skinnygirl Face Care

Exciting times at the Wal-Mart aisle, as we perused the endcap full of lovely looking face and body care line launched exclusively for Wal-Mart by Bethenny Frankel of BRAVO TV fame.  Yes, that  Bethenny: Jill's frenemy on The Real Housewives of New York, the same Bethenny who has launched the successful line of Skinnygirl cocktails, and who has her very own reality show, Bethenny Ever After, which just began it's 3rd season last Monday.  With books, supplements, cleanses, and now skincare, she is a mega marketing machine!

Colleen: Wow, what can't she do? I think she's trying to take over the world.
Silvia: Definitely,  a'la Oprah or Martha Stewart.  Talk about building a brand.
Colleen: Should we try it?
Silvia: Will it make us skinny?

We bought it anyway.  There lies her marketing genius: trademark the term "skinnygirl" and the world is yours.

There were so many products to choose from: lipglosses, face masks, body scrubs, lotions and oils.  All of the products were reasonably priced, and it was difficult to choose, but we settled on a set of 3 mini face "solutions", which cost us less than $12. Love it already.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The Good: Detox Face Mask with Cucumber & Sweet Almond Oil.  We struggled for a minute to squeeze the product out of the tube (small hole, thick product, and we were reluctant to squeeze too hard--face mask dries like venetian plaster on the wall)  but once we applied it, we were pleased.  It smells pleasantly of cucumber, and it has a refreshing tingle to it upon application. We were unsure what to expect, since it contains sweet almond oil (we thought this would block our pores), but looked like a clay sort of mask, which tend to dry out to a crackly finish.  It dried a bit, but not to a crackle.  After removing it, our skin felt soft and refreshed, not stripped.  This gets a Glambo Kiss of Approval.

The Bad:   Energizing Lipshine with Caffeine and Peppermint.  This had a light peppermint scent, which was nice.  But, as you know, we like our energetic lipglosses to be just that.  When we use this type of gloss, we want to feel a zing that will make the blood rush to our lips faster than the thought of kissing Adam Levine (ahem, let me interrupt myself before this fantasy goes long).  When you say ENERGIZING, we expect the likes of Lip Venom or Buxom glosses.  This lipgloss, sadly , left our lips wanting more.  There was nothing energizing about it, and the feel of the gloss, was not pleasant.  Even worse, there was no high gloss to it.  Overall, it was disappointing.  And the tube is so small, it probably yields 6 or 7 applications.  So even if it was likeable, there wouldn't be much in the tube to enjoy.

The Ugly: Vitamin C Face Scrub with Shea Butter and Cranberry.  Our initial thought was: who puts shea butter in a facial scrub??   Shea butter is something we use on cracking elbows and sandpaper knees.  It keeps our hides from turning to leather, but it seems like it would be a major pore-clogger on the face.  Needless to say, we had to suspend disbelief while we tried the product and hope for the best.
Unfortunately, our doubts were confirmed, and then some. Using this scrub was like exfoliating with a mix of rendered bacon fat and  glass shards!  It was too greasy and too rough to use on the face.  Even worse, once we rinsed, we were left with a nasty residue on our faces, and of course broke out over the course of the next few days.  This scrub may be more suitable as a body scrub, but is way too harsh for the lovely faces of our readers.  This gets a sad Glambo Dissssssssssssss.

P.S. In an attempt to swatch the face mask for this post just minutes ago,  I attempted to squeeze the mask out into my hand, and the bottom of the tube burst open and squirted the mask all over my counter!!!

Unbelievable!  This is only the 2nd time I've used this.  I had closed it tightly after using it last time, but the tube still got clogged, and the tube burst.  The packaging for this product get a huge Glambo Dissssssssssssss.

We have to say that calling this gift set "Face Solutions" is laughable.  It's more like "Face Problems Waiting to Happen" in a box.  Too bad, because we were really looking forward to trying the Skinnygirl Margarita Body Scrub, Lotion and Shower Gel.  Not anymore.
